Serena was born in 1975 and brought up in Cornwall. She currently lives in the small fishing town of Padstow on the North Cornwall coast.

From an early age she developed a great love of drawing little houses and people and was incomplete without felt tip, biro and sketchpad.

She was educated at home by her mother, a former stage manager, whilst her father, a graduate from the Royal College of Art encouraged her progress.

Serena's style is unique and is difficult to categorize. However, it is generally accepted that it falls into the naive/primitive style.

Due to the time it takes for each painting to be completed, she has been unable to hold regular exhibitions. However, Serena's original artwork has been included in exhibitions such as 'The Innocent Eye' based on the book by Marion Whybrow. More recently she held the first solo exhibition of her collection which has come to be know as 'Salad Days'.

As Serena's artwork has become increasingly sought after, she has developed a partnership with Saltwater Arts who are now licensed to offer the full range from the 'Salad Days' paintings as art-cards and open or limited edition prints.

Serena's work can also be found on other products including jigsaws and biscuit tins through various other licensed companies.

Serena is a member of the following organizations:

The Association of British Naive Artists
Made in Cornwall Scheme

Process and Composition

Serena can take up to 3 months to complete a painting and will work entirely from her studio. This will take place after she has first visited the chosen location for her subject to take photos, sketches and thoroughly study the area. As such the painting is intended to be just a memory of the town and not an accurate photographic record. The scene gives the impression of encompassing the whole town as if painted from above. (seagulls view)

Several working drawings may be produced before she has a satisfactory composition, where buildings may have been moved, changed, or streets adjusted so that the end result is more interesting and attractive without losing the atmosphere and essence of the town.

The working drawing is then reproduced on to the final paper ready for painting using a variety of processes and mediums as required i.e. pen, ink, pencil, watercolour, acrylic and poster.

General Inspiration

Happy childhood memories of bucket and spade, ice-cream and laughter, and overall activities of times past. As such she is often referred to as a happy Lowry!
